Disable or better yet uninstall excess startup programs (the small icons that show on the lower right beside the clock). Having too many will slow down your startup as well as shutting down. To disable them, go to Start>Run then type in "msconfig". On the startup tab, uncheck unnecessary programs. To uninstall them, use the "Add or Remove Programs" in the control panel.
